Police charge man with murder after assault in South West Rocks

A man will appear in court today charged with murder following the death of a man after an alleged assault on the state’s north coast overnight.

Just before 7pm (Wednesday 28 July 2021) emergency services were called to Albert Harrower Crescent at South West Rocks, after reports a man had been assaulted.

A 61-year-old man was located near the roadway with serious head injuries.

He was treated at the scene by police and NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition, where he later died.

The two men – who are not known to each other – had reportedly been involved in a road rage incident prior to the altercation.

A crime scene was established, which was examined by specialist forensic police, and officers from Mid North Coast Police District commenced an investigation.

A 27-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Kempsey Police Station, where he was charged with murder.

He was refused bail to appear before Port Macquarie Local Court later today (Thursday 29 July 2021).

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing.
