Police Charge Man With Murder At Newtown 21 July

A man will appear in Court after being charged with murder at Newtown last month.

About 8pm on Thursday 18 June 2026, emergency services were called to a unit block on Fitzgerald Street, near Brown Street, Newtown, following reports of a concern for welfare.

Officers attached to Inner West Police Area Command attended and forced entry into a unit, before finding the body of a 63-year-old man.

Initial inquiries indicate the man had been assaulted prior to his death.

A forensic post-mortem examination determined the man had sustained a fatal stab wound to the chest.

A crime scene was established, with Inner West detectives and the Homicide Squad commencing an investigation into the incident under Strike Force Aviato.

Following inquiries by Strike Force detectives, about 9:00am today (Monday 20 July 2026), a 51-year-old was arrested at a correctional facility at Parklea, before he was taken to Riverstone Police Station, where he was charged with murder.

He was refused bail to appear at Blacktown Local Court later today (Tuesday 21 July 2026).
