Police Charge Teen After Maidstone Gym Fire

Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad have charged a teenage boy today as part of their investigation into a suspicious fire at a Maidstone gym last month.

The 17-year-old boy from the Hume area was arrested at his home address this morning and interviewed by police.

He has subsequently been charged with arson, reckless conduct endangering life, possess anything with intent to destroy or damage property, handle stolen goods and theft.

The teen has also been charged with arson in relation to two vehicle fires in Dallas and one in Meadow Heights.

He will face a children’s court later today.

The arrest follows a large fire at a gym on Hampstead Road in the early hours of 6 August.

A number of people were in the premises at the time of the fire, however luckily no one was physically injured.

The building sustained significant damage as a result of the fire.

Detectives will allege the arson was a targeted attack and the investigation into the fire remains ongoing.
