Police charge two after extortion investigation

Financial Crime Squad detectives have charged two men following an investigation into an alleged series of extortion and criminal damage by fire incidents linked to a debt collection business.

Detectives executed search warrants at nine addresses on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 May, in Brighton, South Yarra, Melbourne, Colac, Boonah, Avondale Heights, Windsor and Cheltenham (2).

They subsequently seized four vehicles (one Audi A7, two Mercedes Benz, and one Toyota Landcruiser), six firearms, a significant quantity of cash, quantity of drugs, false identification and police equipment.

A 64-year-old South Yarra man was charged with multiple firearm offences, possess proceeds of crime, possess controlled weapon and possess drug of dependence.

He was bailed to front Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 22 November.

A 46-year-old Brighton man was charged with obtain property by deception, theft of motor vehicle, stalking and installing a software device.

He was bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 10 May.

The investigation remains ongoing.
