Police charge two men over firearms burglary at Cressy

Two men have been charged with burglary, stealing and firearms offences in relation to a firearms burglary at Cressy last night.

Officers from Longford Police, Launceston CIB and Forensics attended the rural property about 7pm last night, after the theft of 13 firearms was reported.

“The owner of the firearms had stored them correctly and had an excellent security system in place, including CCTV, which meant the suspects were identified quickly,” said Inspector Scott Flude.

“Police apprehended the two men at a house in Newnham, and a search of the property resulted in the recovery of a number of firearms, and other stolen items.”

“Some of those items related to this specific incident however other items located are believed to be linked to two other recent firearms burglaries in Launceston”.

“We would like to reiterate, especially to those members of the community who are legal firearms holders, the benefit of having effective security measures in place.”

The 28-year-old man from Prospect and the 32-year-old man from Karoola are expected to appear in court this afternoon.
