Police charge two over suspicious house fire at Dapto

A man and woman have been charged following a suspicious house fire in the state’s Illawarra late last year.

About 4.10am on Saturday 24 December 2022, emergency services were called to Marshall Street, Dapto, after reports of a unit on fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze; however, the home was destroyed, and the adjoining unit suffered smoke damage.

The two occupants self-evacuated and were uninjured.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Following extensive inquiries, on Friday 24 February 2023, police issued a 35-year-old woman with a Court Attendance Notice for conceal serious indictable offence.

She is due to appear in Port Kembla Local Court on Wednesday 5 April 2023.

Following further inquiries, police arrested a 34-year-old man at a worksite in Albion Park, about 11.20am yesterday (Monday 27 February 2023).

He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with damage property by fire.

The man was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court today (Tuesday 28 February 2023).
