As part of the ongoing investigation into the murder of Italian tourist Victoria Cafasso in 1995, police will be undertaking search operations on the East Coast today.
Search and rescue crews, as well as police divers, will conduct a land and water search near St Helens.
This is an area that has not previously been searched, but is an area of interest following a recent review of the case.
Police say it is also as a result of information received from witnesses regarding the movements of a 1970s light coloured Subaru Station Wagon.
Detectives last week released reconstructed images of the vehicle spotted at various locations in the Beaumaris area including at Freshwater Creek at the time of Victoria’s murder, as well as a description of a man seen driving that vehicle.
Police are still interested to hear from anyone who may have knowledge of that vehicle and any person linked to a vehicle of that description in October 1995.
The man was described as being in his 20s, with blonde hair, about six feet tall, slim build, but very fit, sun tanned legs and arms, with the appearance of a surfer.
Detective Acting Inspector Andrew Hanson said while it had been nearly 28 years since Victoria was murdered, a routine review into her death had led police down a new line of inquiry.
“We never close these cases, and the latest searches showcase our investigators’ commitment to finding answers for Victoria’s family,” he said.
