Police determine Ravenswood fatal shooting to be accidental

Extensive police investigations have determined that the fatal shooting involving a Ravenswood man this morning was accidental.

Detective Inspector Kim Steven said that the man, Timmothy Matthew Gardiner, 29, of Ravenswood, died from a single gunshot wound to the chest after the unstable homemade firearm he possessed suddenly discharged.

“As a result of investigations carried out including interviewing a number of witnesses and gathering and analysing evidence from the scene, we are satisfied that Tim’s death was a tragic accident,” Detective Inspector Steven said.

“Police have been able to determine that Tim was in possession of a small homemade firearm at a residence nearby the unit where he was located at the time of his death. Police have spoken to three other men who were present when the incident occurred.

“Police believe Tim was handling the homemade firearm when it suddenly discharged, firing into his chest. Tim then made his way to his mother’s nearby residence, where he died a short time later.

“This is a tragic accident and our thoughts are with Tim’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.”

Police and emergency services were called to an address in Blyth St, Ravenswood, about 7.50am today.

Police including officers from CIB, Forensics and Uniform attended the scene and conducted examinations.

Police would like to thank those members of the public who came forward with information about Tim’s death.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Members of the public are reminded that homemade firearms are not only illegal but can be extremely dangerous.

Tasmania has a permanent firearms amnesty, where members of the public can hand in unwanted, unregistered or illegal firearms to police without penalty.
