Police football teams from across Australia to converge on Hobart for National Police Football Championships next week

The 2026 National Police Football Championship will be held in Tasmania between 12-16 October, with people encouraged to come along and see police football teams from all Australian states represented and vying for the trophy.

President of the Tasmania Police Football Club, Commander Jason Elmer, said the Championships were last held in Tasmania in 2018, and this year matches will be held across three days with around 300 participants.

“From 12-16 October, we’ll see the 36th National Police Football Championships held at North Hobart Oval with police football teams from across Australia coming together and vying for the coveted National Championship Trophy and the Lilliam Armfield Cup,” said Commander Elmer.

“All six Australian states will be fielding both men’s and women’s teams, with 18 games to be played across three championship playing days, with around 300 participants.”

“Many of the matches are played in honour of police officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, with memorial trophies and perpetual shields struck in their honour.”

“On Friday, Tasmania and Western Australia will play off for the Ty Bennett Memorial Shield, in honour of Ty, a popular Hobart footballer and Tasmania Police officer who was killed in a car crash while on duty and responding to an alarm call on 16 February 1999.”

“Entry to the championships is free of charge, and it’s a great way for the community to show their support for police jurisdictions from across Australia.”

People are encouraged to come along and watch the games and show their support for police.
