Today, 24 new police officers graduated from the South Australia Police (SAPOL) Academy, departing with additional skills, knowledge, determination and “life-long friendships”.
Ranging in age from 19 to 43, Course 64’s graduation sees 13 men and 11 women embark on new and fulfilling careers, including in country postings at Port Augusta, Murray Bridge, Mount Gambier and Whyalla.
The new officers were today congratulated by a special guest – Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson, Governor of South Australia.
Graduates bring complementary work experience to the service, including as a Police Security Officer (PSO), SAPOL mounted operations support hand and correctional officer. Others offer unique skills as a former heavy vehicle driver, aged care and disability support worker, retail store manager, marketing coordinator, senior regulatory advisor and customer service representative.
Tejinder always wanted to be a police officer, but age restrictions in India previously prevented him from applying.
“Moving to Australia gave me the chance to fulfil my dream job,” he said.
“Job security with the variety is what attracted me to SAPOL, and being able to make a difference in society.”
Continuing in her role with Army Reserves was important to Emily when applying to SAPOL.
“Being in the Army Reserves has helped me with my training to be a police officer, as a lot of skills and values I acquired are alike,” she said.
“Since starting at the academy, I have developed as a person and have become more confident and outgoing. I have also learnt a lot of skills that I can also utilise outside of work, and developed lifelong friendships.”
Originally from the United Kingdom, becoming a father was a motivating factor for Jack to join the blue family and make a difference.
“After having my son, I wanted to do more to help make his community one he is safe to grow up in,” Jack said.
“Prior to SAPOL, I worked in a telecommunications call centre taking complaints. I believe this experience will help me as an operational police officer, as I had to take heightened emotions and deal with them in a calm and approachable manner.”
While a passion for road safety is driving Tejinder towards a career in Major Crash, Emily’s love of animals may lead her into the Dog Operations Unit. Jack is also excited to commence operational policing and discover the range of opportunities with a career in SAPOL.
Tejinder, Emily and Jack encouraged those who belong in blue to believe in themselves.
