Brimbank Highway Patrol officers are investigating after a near miss in Sydenham this afternoon.
Officers were on patrol when they spotted an ATV turning left from Overton Lea Boulevard towards the Melton Highway just before 3pm.
As the ATV turned, the driver appeared to accelerate heavily causing the vehicle to cross three lanes of traffic.
The ATV then turned left onto McCubbin Drive, before turning left onto Roberston Road and onto the wrong side of the road.
When the driver noticed police, they mounted the footpath at a fast rate of speed directly outside a primary school, before fleeing the scene.
A number of children and parents on the footpath had to scramble out of the way to avoid being injured.
Luckily, no one was physically injured.
It is believed there was a young child in the passenger seat of the ATV at the time.
Investigators are keen to speak to anyone with dash cam footage of the incident, and appeal for the driver of the ATV to contact police.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with information, CCTV/dash cam footage or who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or anonymously at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
