Police have arrested five people as part of an investigation into a series of carjackings in Melbourne’s northwest this month.
Three of the five were arrested yesterday morning following reports several youths, some armed with weapons, were seen fighting near Southbank Promenade about 1.50am.
Police responded and moved in on the trio after the allegedly stolen Hyundai Getz they were believed travelling in was spotted on Stawell Avenue in Dallas shortly after.
Enquiries by police revealed those involved in the fight may have been wanted following a series of carjackings.
A search by general duties officers, the Dog Squad, Public Order Response Team and Critical Incident Response Team located the teens nearby.
Two of those arrested, a 17-year-old from the Hume area and a 15-year-old from the Hume area have been charged with theft of motor vehicle.
A 16-year-old from the Hume area was also interviewed and is expected to be charged with possessing a prohibited weapon.
Following the overnight arrests and as part of an ongoing investigation into a series of alleged carjackings in Coburg, Fawkner, Hadfield, Campbellfield, Mickleham and Wallan between 1 July and 10 July, two more people were also arrested yesterday.
Investigators arrested the pair following the execution of two warrants in Broadmeadows and Meadow Heights.
The 15-year-old and 16-year-old from the Hume area have been interviewed in relation to incidents in Fawkner and Hadfield on Thursday 9 July.
The pair are expected to be charged on summons.
The investigation is ongoing.
