Police investigate sexual assault in Melbourne

Melbourne Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives are investigating a sexual assault which occurred in Melbourne’s CBD earlier this month.

Investigators have been told a 20-year old woman and her friends were walking along Lonsdale Street near the intersection of King Street when they were approached by an unknown group of men around 5am on Sunday 8 May.

It’s understood one of the males then groped at the victim’s bottom sexually assaulting her.

An altercation broke out between the groups before the victim was subsequently struck to the face with an open palm.

The group of men left the scene on foot towards Lonsdale Street, and the woman was taken to hospital with bruising and concussion.

Detectives have released images of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

The man is perceived to be of Pacific Islander/Maori appearance, with shoulder-length dark hair in bunched, dreadlock type curls.

He was wearing a light blue t-shirt, faded jeans, and had a dark beanie tucked into the front of his jeans.
