Police are currently on the scene investigating an incident at Wynyard.
Around 6.30pm a man unlawfully entered a residence on Old Bass Highway and assaulted a female resident.
The women, aged in her seventies, received several head wounds from a blunt object. She has been transported to the North West Regional Hospital.
Police have taken a man into custody in relation to the incident. The man is known to the victim.
Tasmania Fire Service has extinguishing a fire in the residence which started shortly after the assault.
