Police lay arson charge, South Stradbroke Island

Police have charged a 55-year-old Mount Nathan man following a fire which occurred on a houseboat near South Stradbroke Island last night, September 18.

Emergency crews were called to Thomson’s inlet on the Gold Coast Broadwater at approximately 7pm following reports of a boat on fire.

Upon arrival, water police located the vessel well alight.

No one was living aboard at the time of the fire.

It will be alleged a 55-year-old man was located a short time later on a nearby vessel with minor burns.

He was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment, and was later charged with one count of arson.

He is due to appear at Southport Magistrates Court today, September 19.

Detectives from Southport Criminal Investigation Branch are appealing for witnesses, or anyone with relevant vision or information, to come forward.
