Police lay charges after pursuit – Burwood

A man has been charged following a pursuit through Sydney’s south-west overnight.

About 11.50pm (Sunday 22 October 2023), officers from Burwood Police Area Command were patrolling the Five Dock area, when they stopped on Great North Road and spoke with the driver of a stationary Nissan Infiniti sedan.

Police will allege in court that, when the officers returned to their vehicle, the sedan rolled backwards into the police car.

The sedan then allegedly drove away. When it failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.

Additional resources – including PolAir, Traffic and Highway Patrol and Raptor Squad officers – were requested, with the sedan continuing westbound on Parramatta Road.

The vehicle continued on Parramatta Road before the pursuit was terminated due to the alleged dangerous manner of driving.

The sedan crashed into a pole and came to a stop at the intersection of Liverpool and Parramatta Roads at Ashfield about 1.10am today (Monday 23 October 2023).

The driver – a 38-year-old man – was arrested at the scene by officers. During the arrest, the man allegedly resisted police and struggled with several officers, with a number of responding police receiving minor bite marks.

One officer attended Westmead Hospital for assessment to a minor leg injury.

The 38-year-old man taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital under police guard, where he remains.

Following inquiries, the man has now been charged with five offences, including:

  • police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously,
  • drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous,
