Police lay charges – Criminal offences in Alice Springs

An 18-year-old man who attempted to flee the scene after rolling a stolen motor vehicle in the Alice Springs CBD on Monday morning, will appear before Local Court today.

Police CCTV operators observed a white Toyota Landcruiser utility, which had been stolen from a business on Ghan Road, driving recklessly in the Alice Springs CBD around 1:15am.

Just after 2am CCTV captured the vehicle exiting the carpark on Gregory Terrace and driving on the wrong side of the road before the driver failed to negotiate the Bath Street/Gregory Terrace round-about.

The driver lost control of the vehicle which then rolled and slid on its side before coming to a complete stop on the road.

Two occupants from the vehicle climbed out and fled the scene before the driver was apprehended by a bystander until police arrived on scene.

It is alleged the offender spat on one officer and bit another officer on the arm during the arrest.

The man will appear before the Alice Springs Local Court today charged with;

1x Drive a motor vehicle while unlicensed

1x Drive at speed and manner dangerous

1x Aggravated enter building with intent commit offence

1x Unlawful use of Motor vehicle

1x Use of vehicle and cause damage

2x Assault a member of the police force

Members of Strike Force Viper are investigating the unlawful entry of the business in which the vehicle was stolen from, and continue with inquiries to identify the two other occupants of the vehicle.
