Police lay charges – Dangerous driving and assault – Palmerston

Detectives from Major Crash Investigation Unit have served a notice to appear on a 21-year-old male in relation to alleged dangerous driving and an assault which occurred in Palmerston on Friday 14 February 2020.

The man was filmed by his 20-year-old male passenger driving dangerously along Roystonea Avenue and overtaking vehicles at high speed. This video was widely shared on social media.

The two males attended a licensed premises in Palmerston where the 21-year-old male was involved in an altercation during which he allegedly threw a glass bottle at security staff. The male then allegedly attempted to light a fire at the front of the venue.

The males left the venue and were involved in a fatal motor vehicle crash on Roystonea Avenue in which the 20-year-old male driver and a 34-year-old female driving another vehicle were killed.

The 21-year-old male has been charged with driving a motor vehicle dangerously and three counts of aggravated assault of a worker. He will also face charges relating to attempting to set fire to a garden bed at the front of the licensed premises following the alleged assault.

He will appear in the Darwin Local Court on Tuesday 28 April 2020.
