Police lay charges – Prohibition on Regional Travel Directions

WA Police Force have charged a man and woman, who are known to each other, after they allegedly breached the ‘Prohibition on Regional Travel’ Directions.

This Direction was introduced in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19 in Western Australia.

The 29-year-old woman is a current serving officer within the Crime Command. Unrelated to this matter, the officer recently tendered her resignation which was approved and is effective as of May 2020.

It is alleged on Thursday 9 April and Wednesday 15 April, the pair travelled by car from the Wheatbelt region into the Perth/Peel region without a lawful exemption.

It is alleged, on both occasions the man driving the vehicle was advised by Police he was not an exempted traveller and was given a direction to turn around. It is further alleged the man failed to comply with this direction and immediately continued beyond the police checkpoint.

A 24-year-old man from Walliston has been charged with two counts of Fail to Comply with a Direction and is due to appear in Midland Magistrates Court on Friday 15 May 2020.

The 29-year-old woman from Swan View has been charged with two counts of Fail to Comply with a Direction and is due to appear in Midland Magistrates Court on Wednesday 2 June 2020.

Internal Affairs Unit will not be investigating this matter further due to the officer’s previously tendered resignation.
