Police lay charges – Structure fire – Remote Community

Northern Territory Police have charged a 19-year-old male in relation to a structure fire that occurred in the early hours of Monday 16 March 2020.

Serious Crime Detectives and Forensic Investigators conducted an investigation into the alleged arson of a community health centre.

It is alleged that a 19-year-old male was acting suspicious near the clinic while police and emergency service personnel were attempting to extinguish the fire which had engulfed the clinic ambulance and parts of the clinic structure.

The male approached police and claimed he had caused the fire before smashing a police vehicle windscreen and attempting to flee the scene.

Police arrested the 19-year-old and he has since been charged with:

  • aggravated assault
  • armed with offensive weapon at night
  • arson
  • damage to property.

The male has been remanded and will appear in Alice Springs Local Court on Wednesday 18 March 2020.
