Police lay charges – Tobacco and firearms in Katherine

Northern Territory Police have charged a man in Katherine with tobacco and firearms offences.

On Tuesday 14 September 2021, Strike Force Cerberus officers in Katherine conducted an undercover operation after identifying that tobacco was being sold to children from a residence.

Police arrested a 76-year-old man and executed a search warrant upon his residence.

During the search warrant, Police located an unsecured firearm under the man’s bed. Nine more firearms in the residence were also seized.

The man has been charged with:

  • Sell tobacco less than 25 grams
  • Failing to comply with firearm storage requirements

He was bailed to appear in Katherine Local Court on 28 September.

Superintendent Craig Garland said “It’s absolutely deplorable that people would benefit from selling tobacco to children. To then compound his offending by having an unsecure firearm in the community, shows a flagrant disregard for the law.”
