Police make arrest after Coburg crash

Police have arrested a man and a woman after they crashed a car that was allegedly bearing stolen number plates in Coburg early this morning.

Brunswick police first spotted the car parked on Sydney Road, near Bell Street, just after 2am.

As they were performing checks on the vehicle a man got into the car and drove away.

Police followed the car through a number of back streets before losing sight of it.

A short time later police found the car after it collided with another vehicle and a traffic light at the intersection of Edward Street and Sydney Road, Coburg.

A 38-year-old Coburg North man was arrested after he attempted to flee the scene on foot.

A 25-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the car was also arrested at the scene.

Police searched the car and seized a number of items including stolen identifications and bank cards.

The driver of the other car, a 32-year-old Tarneit man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing with both the man and woman still in custody.
