Police make arrest – Crime series at Tennant Creek

Northern Territory Police have arrested a 14-year-old male in relation to a crime series through Tennant Creek.

Between 4:00am and 6:00am on 30 December 2023, 2 separate incidents of unlawful entries were reported to police.

At 4:30am, police received a report of unknown persons that had broken into a residential caravan. 2 offenders entered the caravan armed with a metal pole, demanding the 66-year-old male occupant to lay on the ground, before rummaging through property, while a further 2 offenders remained outside the caravan. The 66-year-old male received medical treatment at Tennant Creek Hospital for bruises and abrasions after being hit by the metal pole.

Around 5:00am, police received a report of an unlawful entry on a residential premises. A window by the front door of the property had been smashed, where the offender gained entry. A 38-year-old male resident was confronted by the adult male with a broomstick, with the 3 young males outside of the property, demanding his wallet and keys. A further offender attempted to enter a bedroom, where the male resident’s wife and children were barricading the door. All offenders fled the scene after stealing the vehicle and wallet.

Northern Territory Police recovered the stolen vehicle a short time later, with forensics examining the vehicle.

A 14-year-old male has been charged with:

  • Driving using motor vehicle without consent
  • Drive vehicle in a manner dangerous
  • Drive a motor vehicle while unlicensed
  • Not stopping after crash
  • 2 x damage to property

He has been remanded in custody.

Investigations are continuing to identify others involved in these incidents.
