Police make arrest – Disturbance at Casuarina

Northern Territory Police have arrested a man and conveyed a youth home after a large disturbance in Casuarina yesterday.

Shortly before 7pm, police received reports of a large disturbance involving up to 50 people in an underground carpark at a shopping centre on Trower Road, Casuarina.

General duties attended the scene a short time later with the crowd having already dispersed. Members located a 16-year-old male inside the grocery store with injuries and he was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital to receive treatment.

While in attendance, officers observed a man hand a youth a machete before the youth allegedly ran towards members of the public, ignoring police commands to stop. Police pursuing the youth on foot deployed a taser and a nearby member of security assisted apprehending the 15-year-old, who was subsequently arrested with a machete and drugs in his possession. The youth was uninjured.

The 20-year-old man was arrested nearby without incident.

The youth was conveyed home to a responsible adult.

The 20-year-old man remains in custody and is expected to be charged later today.

Superintendent Sean Parnell said “What we saw yesterday in Casuarina Square was completely unacceptable and thankfully no members of the pubic were injured.
