Police make arrest – Pursuit – Palmerston

Northern Territory Police have arrested a 22-year-old male following multiple pursuits throughout Palmerston and the northern suburbs overnight.

Police first sighted a stolen vehicle in Karama and commenced a pursuit around 10:50pm last night. The pursuit continued outbound on the Stuart Highway before it was terminated as a result of the vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road.

The vehicle was sighted for a second time heading outbound towards Palmerston and a second pursuit was commenced. It was terminated due to the driver’s dangerous manner of driving.

Police were conducting a search phase for the vehicle when it was sighted again in Moulden. A further two pursuits were initiated in Moulden and Gray but were subsequently terminated due to the offenders continued dangerous driving.

A Tyre Deflation Device (TDD) was successfully deployed on Chung Wah Terrace and the stolen vehicle sustained a spiked tyre. Another pursuit was initiated and the vehicle turned into the carpark at Gateway Shopping Centre where it continued to drive erratically. Police set up TDDs at the exit points.

Police allege the driver spun the stolen vehicle and deliberately hit a police vehicle. The stolen vehicle then drove out of the carpark and it was successfully spiked again.

Police immediately approached the stolen vehicle and apprehended the driver after he jumped out of the vehicle. He was conveyed to the Darwin Watch House and he is expected to be charged later this afternoon.
