Police Minister Paul Papalia has welcomed the newest members of the Western Australian Police Force after they graduated from the Joondalup Police Academy last night.
The 58 men and 33 women vary in age from 19 to 46 years and come from a diverse range of previous employment backgrounds including a former lawyer, sales assistant, bus driver, teacher, bank manager, security guard, cabinet maker, prison officer, roof plumber, bar manager and a zoologist.
One third of last night’s graduates were born overseas, including Brazil, China, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Pakistan, the Philippines and South Africa.
Eight graduates are Aboriginal, 12 can speak a second language and nine are from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
In the last State Budget, the McGowan Government fully funded the recruitment of 950 additional police officers.
Last night’s graduation marks the completion of the recruitment and training of the first 150 of those officers.
As stated by Police Minister Paul Papalia:
“I welcome our newest graduates and wish them long, rewarding and safe careers.
“The officers who graduated last night come from a diverse range of backgrounds and I know our Police Force will be further enriched by the variety of skills that each of these new graduates brings.
“I also pay tribute to retiring Police Chaplain Keith Carmody and thank him for his outstanding chaplaincy work over the last 15 years.
“He has worked tirelessly to look after the mental and spiritual health of all our police officers, and has himself at times had to confront the horrific consequences of some of the worst aspects of our community.
“I congratulate all our latest graduates and thank you for your dedication and commitment to keep the community of Western Australia safe.”
