Police officers assaulted

Two Northern Territory Police officers have been assaulted in separate incidents over the weekend.

Police were approached by members of the public reporting a domestic incident at Wurrumiyanga at 6:30pm yesterday. As a 19-year-old man was being placed under arrest, the female police officer was punched in the face multiple times. The man fled the scene and was handed into police by a community member two hours later.

The man has been charged with:

  • 2x aggravated assault
  • resist police in the execution of duty
  • assault a member of the police force cause harm
  • disorderly behaviour in a public place.

He has been remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Local Court tomorrow.

Separately, police responded to a report of a woman walking through traffic on the Stuart Highway in Parap at 7:00pm on Friday 7 February. The woman appeared intoxicated and was taken into protective custody. During this process, the woman spat in the face of a police officer. The woman was charged with assault a member of the police force and will appear in Darwin Local Court today.

Assistant Commissioner Narelle Beer said, “This is inexcusable and shocking behaviour. Our members go to work every day to keep the community safe and it is unacceptable that they are assaulted, spat on or abused when doing their job. Assaulting police is deplorable and those who do will be held to account and presented before court”.
