Northern Territory Police have arrested a 24-year-old man in relation to a burglary at a bank in Katherine on Tuesday.
At around 11:45pm, police received reports of a man allegedly attempting to break into an ATM at a bank on Katherine Terrace.
CCTV captured the man allegedly attempting to access the ATM from outside the building before forcing entry through the front door of the premises.
Once inside, the man allegedly attempted to access a number of safes before gaining entry to the rear of an ATM and stealing two cash drawers containing cash.
The offender subsequently fled the premises towards Railway Terrace.
General duties members attended and established a crime scene, with the Crime Scene Examination Unit and Strike Force Cerberus commencing investigations.
Following investigations by Strike Force Cerberus and the Northern Investigations Section, police arrested a 24-year-old man in Katherine last night.
Majority of the cash allegedly stolen during the burglary has since been recovered.
Police are investigating whether the man may also be linked to a number of other recent commercial break-ins in the Katherine region. Those investigations remain ongoing.
The 24-year-old is expected to be charged later today.
Acting Superintendent Warren Scott said police would continue to target those responsible for property offending in Katherine.
“Commercial break-ins impact local businesses and the wider community, and this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.
“Our members have worked quickly to identify and arrest the alleged offender and recover the stolen cash.
“Community safety remains our priority, and police will continue to actively target offenders whose behaviour causes harm and disruption across Katherine.”
Investigations remain ongoing.
