Motorists are reminded of road closures and speed reductions which will be in place for the annual MS Gong charity bike ride, which supports people living with multiple sclerosis, takes place tomorrow.
A high-visibility police operation will be in place on Sunday 5 November 2023, to ensure the safety and security of those participating in the charity bike ride, supporters, road users and the wider community.
An estimated 6,000 cyclists have registered to participate in the charity event, which consists of two rides – an 82km ride starting at the Tempe Recreation Reserve from 6am and a 54km ride, starting at Preston Park, Engadine from 7am.
Both routes will travel through the Royal National Park, Stanwell Tops, Sea Cliff Bridge and along the NSW coast ending at Lang Park, Wollongong.
Road closures will gradually reopen as participants make their way down the South Coast with all roads expected to be reopened by 4pm.
General duties officers from across the Central Metropolitan and Southern Regions, will be assisted by specialist police from the Bicycle Unit, Police Transport Command, and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command throughout the operation.
Operation Commander, Superintendent Rohan Cramsie, said that police are working with event organisers to minimise the impact on road users and local communities as well as ensuring a safe and family-friendly event for everyone to enjoy.
“The MS Gong Ride has been supporting those fighting MS for over 40 years now, and is a world class event that the NSW Police Force are proud to support,” Supt Cramsie said.
“Road and lane closures, as well as special event clearways and speed reductions will be in place along the scenic route from Sydney to Wollongong,” said Supt Cramsie.
“So, if you are planning to travel between Sydney and Wollongong on Sunday – slow down, drive to the conditions and look out for other road users.”
