Police responding to fatal traffic incident at Hope Vale

Investigations are continuing after a Cooktown man died in a traffic incident that occurred in Hope Vale on Sunday.

Around 2.45am, a Toyota Landcruiser utility with seven people in the tray, was travelling along Elim Road when it stopped to let one of the passengers out.

It will be alleged as the ute pulled away a 31-year-old man fell from the rear of the ute, striking his head on the roadway.

This morning, the man sadly passed away as a result of the injuries sustained.

A 25-year-old Hope Vale man has been arrested in relation to the incident and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

He is expected to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Investigators are asking for anyone who may have witnessed any of the incident to contact police.

Detectives and the Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the matter and inquiries are continuing.
