Police search for Mayik Atem after Sunshine death

Homicide Squad detectives are appealing for public assistance as part of a significant search for Mayik Atem following the fatal stabbing of a teenage boy in Sunshine last week.

Emergency services were called to Station Place about 3.45pm on 18 May after reports of an altercation and stabbing.

Pa Sawm Lyhym, a 16-year-old Melton South boy, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

Two other 16-year-old boys were also injured, with one taken to hospital and one treated at the scene.

Detectives are still working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and the motivation for the altercation.

Investigators have been searching for people believed to be connected to the incident.

Two teenage boys, a 17-year-old from Caroline Springs and an 18-year-old from Burnside, have already been interviewed by police in relation to the incident.

Both were released without charge pending further enquiries.

A significant search is currently underway for the third person, 17-year-old Hillside boy Mayik Atem.

Atem is described as being between 185-190cm tall with a slim build and black hair in a short dreadlocks style.

It is not known what he was last seen wearing.

Images of Atem have been released in the hope someone recognises him and can provide information about his current whereabouts.

Atem is known to frequent the Sunshine, Hillside, Braybrook and Sydenham areas.

Police urge members of the public to call triple zero (000) immediately if he is sighted and not to approach him.

At this time it is not known if Atem is armed or has access to any weapons.

Detectives are also urging Atem to make contact with police or hand himself in at any police station as soon as possible.

Atem has not returned to his Hillside home since Friday and his family are concerned for his welfare.

Anyone with information that could assist police with their enquiries is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
