Police seek information on Suspicious fires – Palmerston

Northern Territory Police are calling for information in relation to suspicious fires that occurred in Palmerston.

About 3:00pm, police received a report that the playground at George Park in Johnston was engulfed in flames. Police, Fire and Rescue units attended and the fire was extinguished. The playground sustained extensive damage.

While responding to the fire at George Park fire fighters came across a fire in the playground at Hobart Park, Johnston. The fire was quickly extinguished with moderate damage to the shade structure and play equipment.

About 10:20pm, police received a report of a fire at the playground at Joan Fejo Park in Rosebery. This fire was also extinguished by fire fighters but the playground was extensively damaged.

About 11:20pm, police received another report of a fire at George Park. Fire and Rescue units attended and extinguished a fire that engulfed the playground. The equipment was completely destroyed.

About 12:30am on Wednesday 5 August 2020, police received a further report regarding a scrub fire at George Park. This fire was quickly extinguished but the circumstances surrounding the fire suggest that it was deliberately lit.

Detectives from Strike Force Trident are currently investigating these incidents which are believed to be intentional and linked.

Members of the public who witnessed suspicious activity in the vicinity of these playgrounds at the time of the fires are asked to come forward. CCTV footage is also being sought.
