Police seek witnesses to stabbing on tram

Transit Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance after a man was stabbed during an altercation on a tram in Melbourne’s CBD.

Police have been told a verbal altercation broke out between two men, not known to each other, while travelling on the Route 59 tram around 2.10pm today.

The men exited the tram at Haymarket Street, near the intersection of Elizabeth Street, where the offender produced a knife and stabbed the victim in the face.

The offender ran from the scene, and the victim was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police arrested a man in possession of a knife at the intersection of Elizabeth and Flinders streets around 3pm.

He was interviewed and released pending further enquiries.
