Police seize alcohol, cannabis and kava during roadside operation

Northern Territory Police have seized a significant quantity of alcohol, cannabis and kava during a targeted roadside enforcement operation in the West Arnhem region.

On Friday 14 August 2026, Jabiru and Gunbalanya police established a roadside enforcement point at South Alligator, approximately 45 kilometres east of Jabiru, targeting the unlawful movement of alcohol and prohibited substances into General Restricted Areas.

During the operation, police intercepted a vehicle travelling towards a General Restricted Area and conducted a search.

Police allegedly located and seized:

  • 2.284 kilograms of kava
  • 148 grams of cannabis
  • 100 standard drinks of mixed alcohol.

Three people were issued Notices to Appear in relation to the seizure.

Superintendent Lee Morgan said the operations such as this are an important part of our efforts to disrupt the supply of alcohol and drugs into restricted areas.

“Alcohol and illicit substances can contribute to significant harm within our communities, including violence, antisocial behaviour and other offending.

“This seizure means these substances will not reach their intended destination, and we will continue targeting those who attempt to transport them into restricted areas.”

Police urge anyone with information about the unlawful supply or transportation of alcohol, cannabis or kava into restricted areas to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
