Police update: Assault at Benowa, QLD

Police have charged a 29-year-old man over the alleged assault of a cyclist at Benowa who was the subject of a public appeal.

Around 6.45pm a cyclist was headed north on Ross Street when he was struck in the head by something thrown from a passing vehicle.

At the intersection with Ashmore Road the cyclist has approached a silver SUV, which he believed the item was thrown from. 

The male passenger exited the vehicle and allegedly began punching the cyclist before pushing him to the ground in front of cars which were forced to stop.

The altercation spilled into the intersection, and on-coming vehicles, and at one point the passenger allegedly threw the cyclists bicycle at him.

The female driver of the SUV, which had stopped on the other side of the intersection, approached the man and they fled the scene, allegedly stealing the cyclists backpack containing his phone and personal items.

The cyclist, a 36-year-old Gold Coast man received abrasions and bruising as a result of the incident.

A 29-year-old man from Nerang has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and stealing.

He is due to face Southport Magistrates Court on April 4, 2022.

Police investigations are ongoing.
