Police update: Assault in Southport, QLD

Police have charged a man after the alleged assault of a 51-year-old man and his 39-year-old wife at the Gold Coast yesterday.

It is alleged around 5.10pm a 64-year-old man, who is known to the 51-year-old man and 39-year-old woman, has used a billy club to hit the younger man across the head a number of times.

The 55-year-old man’s wife has made attempts to help her husband when the 64-year-old man has punched her to the side of the head.

As the man left the shop he has pushed a 61-year-old woman to the ground. She was not known to the man and was shopping in the centre.

The older man has returned to his shop, before being held by security staff until police arrived.

The 51-year-old man was taken to hospital to receive treatment for his injuries.

The 39-year-old woman did not require any medical attention.

A 64-year-old Southport man has been charged with three counts of assault, and one count each of assault occasioning bodily harm, serious assault of a person over 60 and going armed so as to cause fear.

He will appear in the Southport Magistrates Court today, August 24.
