Police update: Dangerous operation of stolen vehicles at Townsville

Two juveniles have been arrested this morning and are assisting police with their inquiries into multiple incidents on Sunday night and Monday morning where people in stolen cars rammed police cars and threw projectiles at police cars.

A 26-year-old man has been charged with one count each of entering a premises to commit an indictable offence in relation to a break in of a Currajong business on September 2 and attempted enter dwelling in relation to an incident at a house in Kirwan on September 4. More charges are expected.

He is due to re-appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on October 10.

Police are investigating multiple incidents involving stolen cars driving dangerously in Townsville between midnight at 5am this morning.

Around 1am, the driver of a stolen dark grey Hyundai i30 deliberately drove onto the incorrect side of the road at the intersection of Grosvenor and Tippet Streets, Gulliver directly into the path of the police vehicle. The driver of the police car took evasive action to avoid a collision.

Shortly after, the stolen dark grey Hyundai i30 threw a brick at a police car driving inbound on Hugh Street, Pimlico striking the rear driver’s side door. A second brick was thrown but missed the police car.

Then, on Hugh Street, Gulliver, the driver of a stolen silver Hyundai ix35 drove at a police car at speed, with high beam lights on and threw a brick which hit the windscreen of a police vehicle.

A police vehicle was parked on Fulham Road, Vincent when a stolen grey Hyundai i30 drove toward it and threw two bricks, with one hitting the bonnet of the police vehicle.

Around 1.10am a police vehicle was patrolling outbound on Fulham Rd towards Nathan Street when the driver of the stolen dark grey Hyundai i30 threw a brick at the police vehicle smashing its drivers’ side rear window.

Then a police vehicle driving outbound on Fulham Road near Palmerston Street when the stolen silver Hyundai ix35 and the dark grey Hyundai i30 were seen driving at speed in the opposite direction. A brick was thrown at the police car from the dark grey Hyundai i30 driving, the driver of the police vehicle was able to take evasive action to avoid the vehicle being hit.

Around 3.30am, a police car travelling on Ingham Rd Townsville when a stolen black Ford Mondeo sedan driving at high speed in opposite direction with high beams on and swerved into the path of the police vehicle, then sped away.

Around 5am, a stolen white Toyota Prado rammed the rear of a police car driving on Mill Drive, Kirwan and attempted to ram two other police cars in the vicinity.

A fourth police car approaching the scene was also targeted on Mill Drive near Joyce Street and rammed from the side before driving away at speed.

Around 5.30am the stolen white Toyota Prado was located abandoned in Tyler Street, Heatley.

The dark grey Hyundai i30 was stolen from Ashburton Place, Douglas was reported stolen at 3am.

The silver Hyundai ix35 was stolen from Second Avenue, Railway Estate around 11pm last night.

The black Ford Mondeo sedan was stolen around 11pm last night from a Watson Street, Rosslea address.

The white Toyota Prado was stolen from Glendale Drive, Annandale around 4.10am this morning.
