Police update: Double fatal crash – Bakewell

Northern Territory Police continue to investigate the double fatal crash that occurred on Roystonea Avenue on Friday 14 February 2020.

Detectives from Major Crash Investigation Unit are reviewing footage that has been widely shared on social media following the crash. The footage is believed to have been recorded from a different vehicle earlier in the evening by one of the persons who died in the crash. The driver in this footage is believed to be the passenger in the fatal crash.

Police are also aware of an alleged incident involving the persons a short time prior to the crash at a licensed premise.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said, “The type of driving displayed in the footage is extremely dangerous and incredibly irresponsible. We’ve interviewed a number of witnesses who were overtaken immediately prior to the crash. The manner of driving described by them is very similar to the driving recorded on the footage earlier in the night. It is incredibly sad that an innocent party, simply travelling to work, was killed by the actions of a reckless driver.”

The surviving passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries and remains in hospital for medical treatment.

Police continue to call for any witnesses who observed the vehicle prior to the crash or anyone with information about the footage being shared on social media. Anyone who observed the disturbance is also requested to contact police on 131 444 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
