Police update: Hand Held Scanners – Top End

Northern Territory Police are continuing to proactively scan for prohibited weapons after new legislation was passed earlier this year.

Three authorities were declared recently in the Darwin City, Casuarina and Palmerston Areas.

An authority declared this morning on Mitchell Street, Darwin City, scanned 20 people and returned no results for prohibited weapons.

An authority was declared yesterday for the areas around the Palmerston Bus Exchange and the suburb of Casuarina.

47 people were scanned in Palmerston, with 5 positive results for prohibited weapons.

55 people were scanned in Casuarina, with 1 positive result for a prohibited weapon.

Warnings and Infringements were issued to those found not to have a valid reason for carrying prohibited weapons.

Commander Daniel Bacon said “Our focus remains on education when it comes to the scanners and the possession of prohibited items.

“There is no reason to be carrying a knife in an urban area, especially around bus exchanges.

“The response from the public so far has been very positive and NT Police will continue to work to ensure the safety of everyone.”
