Police update: Sexual assault at Cranbrook

A 19-year-old man is assisting police with their inquiries following investigations into the sexual assault of a 66-year-old woman in Cranbrook this morning.

Just before 6am the woman was walking on a pathway next to the river near Victor Street when she was confronted by a man and sexually assaulted.

The woman suffered serious facial injuries and was transported to the Townsville University Hospital for treatment.

Police established a crime scene near the river walkway at Cranbrook.

A 19-year-old man was taken into custody and is currently assisting police with their inquiries.

Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area is being urged to contact police.

Investigations are continuing.
