Pop up Bike Fest encourages riders of all ages to get on a bike – Wollongong

Now that summer is just around the corner, there’s no better time to brush up on your cycling skills.

Wollongong City Council, in partnership with Ride Nation, Transport NSW, Cycling Tours NSW, and Illawarra Academy of Sport will hold a free pop-up cycling event at Lang Park, Marine Drive.

Join us in Lang Park on Sunday 29 November from 10am – 12noon to learn some new tips and tricks for bike riding around the City of Wollongong. This event will coincide with the Illawarra Cycling Club’s Criterium held on Flagstaff Hill at the same time.

“We know that confidence can be a big hurdle for people wanting to ride a bike. That’s why we’re holding this free event to encourage people of all ages to get on a bike and give cycling a go”, said Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM.

“Cycling is a great way to have fun with friends and family and we’re delighted to provide the community with a chance to connect with some great local cycling programs and activities. It’s also a great opportunity for us to raise awareness of cycling before we host the 2022 UCI Road World Championships in September 2022.”

The pop-up cycling event is free, simply BYO bike and helmet! Families are welcome, and children are asked to be accompanied by an adult.

There will be a display of retro, vintage, all-abilities, odd and high-tech bicycles. Attendees will also be able to meet local cycling champions, ride a mini obstacle course, get coaching and safety tips, power a light globe by cycling and more.

Alex Meyland, Ride National Centre Co-ordinator – Wollongong, said he was keen to be involved in the cycling expo.

“Ride Nation Wollongong is an initiative of AusCycling closely aligned to the 2022 UCI Road World Championships Legacy Plan and aims to get more people riding their bikes regardless of age, skill level or type of cycling.”
