Popular STATE OF PLAY season set to open in January

  • STATE OF PLAY returns for a third year in 2023
  • Programmed by the Arts and Culture Trust, STATE OF PLAY won the coveted Best Independent Hub Award at FRINGE WORLD 2022
  • Promotes homegrown, Western Australian creatives and independent artists
  • The popular STATE OF PLAY season will run from 20 January to 5 February 2023 at the State Theatre Centre as part of FRINGE WORLD 2023.

With the theme of Air Guitar, the event program will feature 30 productions and 145 performances, 77 per cent of which originate from Western Australia.

The Air Guitar State Competition will run through the season, plus the School of Air workshops will provide masterclasses in air guitar to children over seven years of age.

STATE OF PLAY has run for two seasons in 2021 and 2022, and is themed around a form of play (previously chess and speed-cubing).

As stated by Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman:

“I am delighted to launch the Arts and Culture Trust (ACT) programmed festival, which promotes homegrown, Western Australian creatives and independent artists.

“STATE OF PLAY creates a pathway for independent artists and presenters to use the state-of-the-art facilities at the State Theatre Centre, plus provides an opportunity for these artists to engage with ACT’s experienced staff through technical and marketing workshops.

“The program has the biggest ever selection of shows for children and includes a range of genres for everyone showcasing local, national and international talent in theatre, music, comedy, dance, cabaret, improv and air guitar.”
