Potato Shed hosts reworked George Orwell classic

A radical reworking of George Orwell’s Animal Farm will come under the spotlight in Drysdale as the Potato Shed hosts three performances of the iconic political fable over 22-23 August 2023.

The 60-minute performance sees Orwell’s fierce parable retold for an era of climate change, exploitation, and corruption.

Animal Farm is a satire about the use and abuse of power, and an assault on disinformation, extremism, and greed.

The performance has been described as a satirical high-octane mix of dance breaks and physical comedy, providing a whirlwind ride through revolution.

First published as a book in 1945, the tale tells the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy.

In a bonus for Geelong theatregoers, the performance will feature Drysdale-raised actor James Malcher who says the opportunity is exciting at both a personal and professional level.

I’m excited to learn that award-winning performance troupe Bloomshed is bringing their adaptation to the region; this well-known play will be familiar to many Greater Geelong residents.

I expect that many people will remember this book as a staple of their secondary school English studies.

The story caused quite a stir back in its day and will be interesting to see how Bloomshed has reworked the story to engage with a modern audience.

I’m pleased that the Potato Shed can once again host a performance that is both entertaining and also provokes thought.

As a local it’s going to be exciting to have the opportunity to perform at the Potato Shed for the very first time.

This is a performance that hits on a lot of different themes and is quite challenging; we’re really pumped to be able to bring this show to regional audiences.

We’re especially excited about introducing some comedy into the performance and making it relevant to the Australian political climate of today.
