In a significant sign of support for reducing household energy bills and advancing the clean energy transition, Friends of the Earth and Environment Victoria have today congratulated more than 50 Victorian state election candidates who have stepped up to sign the Cheaper Power Pledge.

“The Cheaper Power Pledge commits candidates to supporting policies that ramp up the clean energy transition in a way that leaves no one behind and provides cost of living relief,” said Anna Langford, Friends of the Earth’s Energy Justice spokesperson.

The multi-party show of support signals a significant shift in the election landscape around energy policy, as candidates from across Victoria including Labor, Greens, Victorian Socialists, Animal Justice and independents commit to slashing household energy bills and accelerating the state’s transition to renewable energy.

“As the state election approaches, candidates’ policies on cost of living are front of mind for people across Victoria. We know that investment in renewables infrastructure and state-wide electrification are proven ways to dramatically bring down the cost of energy for Victorian families,’ said Joy Toose, Environment Victoria spokesperson.

“Nearly a million Victorians are saving an average of $1500 a year with rooftop solar, but many people including renters and apartment dwellers are missing out on those savings. Will all candidates commit to policies that give all Victorians access to cheap renewable energy?” asked Joy Toose.

“With more than 50 candidates already signed on, there’s still time for more candidates to step forward and sign the pledge before the November 6 deadline,” said Anna Langford.

“We welcome the commitment of all candidates in the Victorian state election to cleaner, cheaper power that can play a vital role in shaping a more affordable and sustainable future for families in all Victorian electorates,” said Joy Toose.
