City of Darwin’s Pre-Cyclone Clean Up verge collections have officially finished for another year, with Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis praising the efforts of residents.
Almost 500 tonnes of waste have been collected from verges across Darwin, supporting the community in preparing for cyclone season.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the clean-up helps make Darwin cyclone ready, whilst also providing an opportunity to reuse and recycle household waste that might otherwise end up in landfill.
This year, 40 per cent of all material collected from verges was diverted away from landfill for reuse or recycling, including e-waste, whitegoods, cardboard, scrap metal and tyres. This is a 2 per cent increase in materials and items diverted from landfill in the previous year.
“We are working hard towards improving the environmental sustainability of our city, and reusing and recycling as much as possible is one way we can help create a better future for Darwin,” Mr Vatskalis said.
“If you need an item for your home, consider visiting the Trash and Treasure Shop at Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility. You may find what you need, in great condition and at a fraction of the price.
“Buying second hand at the Trash and Treasure Shop supports Helping People Achieve (HPA) and is one step towards reducing emissions and better supporting our environment,” Mr Vatskalis said.
If any items were left on your verge after the pre-cyclone clean-up, they have likely been put out too late for collection or were prohibited items that the crews cannot collect.
Residents are required to remove these items from their verge within seven days and organise their own disposal.
