Project by UNE’s Coastal Healthy Communities Coalition featured in ‘Journal Tribune’

Photographs taken by local high school students as part of the Photovoice Project were recently displayed at Engine, a community arts organization in Biddeford.

The exhibit was featured in an article in the Journal Tribune.

The Photovoice Project is a collaboration between the local high school program Alternative Pathways Center and Coastal Healthy Communities Coalition (CHCC), a comprehensive community-based health coalition housed within the University of New England’s College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Students taking part in the project were given digital cameras or asked to use the camera on their phones to take pictures around their community.

The goal of the project was for the students to capture photos that best represent their experiences and how they view their community.

“It’s a real expressive tool and a way to process things in their lives,” CHCC’s coordinator Nina Macgowan told the Journal Tribune.

Students were asked to select a few of their favorite photos and create captions.

Several of the photos were put on display for the exhibit at Engine that ran from May 22 to June 1.
