Provisional licence holder charged with high range PCA after crash in Haymarket

A provisional licence holder has been charged with serious traffic offences after a crash in the Sydney CBD overnight.

About 4.20am today (Saturday 19 February 2022), a vehicle collided with a tree before flipping and landing onto its side at the intersection of Quay and Thomas streets, Haymarket.

Officers from Sydney Crime Scene were at the location on an unrelated matter when they witnessed the crash and immediately rendered aid to the driver. A male passenger fled the scene on foot.

Police from Sydney City Police Area Command attended, and the driver – a provisional licence holder, who is subjected to a zero-alcohol limit – participated in a roadside breath test, returning a positive result.

The 18-year-old driver was arrested and taken to Day Street Police Station where a subsequent breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.161.

He was charged with drive with high range PCA, and negligent driving. His licence has also been suspended.

The Chippendale man has been granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 23 March 2022.

There were no reports of injuries and police are not looking for the passenger.
