Provisional Payments available to CFA people

Message from Sylvia Hudson, Executive Manager of Health, Safety, Environment and Wellbeing

The State Government’s 12-month Provisional Payments Pilot came into effect for CFA people on 1 July.

Provisional Payments available to CFA people

The State Government launched a pilot for provisional payments in mid-June this year to cover the cost of mental health treatment for CFA staff and volunteers.

This pilot is an Australian-first for emergency services. It will make a significant difference to anyone working in our sector experiencing work-related mental health issues, ensuring they can get help straight away when they need it.

We know that early treatment and support is vital in terms of reducing the long-term impact for people experiencing mental health conditions.

And we also know that the thought of waiting for a claim to be processed can be a barrier to seeking help.

The Provisional Payments Pilot will cover mental health related medical expenses for up to 13 weeks once a claim is submitted.

This means you will be able to access funding for reasonable medical treatment and services while your claim is being assessed, so there’s no delay in accessing the support you need.

GP visits, medication and visits to psychologists and psychiatrists are among the costs to be covered under the scheme.

When you submit a claim to CFA you will be asked if you’d like to take part in the pilot. Payment for treatment begins as soon you opt in, even while your claim is being determined.

In the event of a claim being denied, the program still provides access to paid treatment for a period of up to 13 weeks.

Mental illness can affect all of us. It’s not a personal failing to reach out for help.

This pilot provides a fantastic opportunity for all CFA people to access early treatment for mental health issues.
