Public nuisance at Maroochydore

Police would like to thank members of the public for their assistance to arrest a man at Picnic Point yesterday.

Just before 7pm, officers were called to a man allegedly creating a nuisance by throwing rocks and yelling at other members of the public.

When approached, the 54-year-old man allegedly jumped in the Maroochy River to evade police. Fearing for the man’s safety, officers followed the man into the water.

Members of the community offered assistance by providing transport for the officers on jet-skis and a boat. A group of kayakers also pitched in to lend a hand.

During the pursuit through the river, a Taser, portable radio and mobile phone was damaged.

The Nambour man was taken into police custody after almost an hour and charged with one count each of committing public nuisance and obstructing police.

He was granted police bail to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on January 15.
