Public place glass-only bins will be removed mid-March following Council’s rollout of its new kerbside glass collection service.
The public place bins were installed as a temporary solution to the recycling crisis after Council asked residents to remove glass from recycling bins. The bins were placed in central positions in towns throughout the shire in November 2019. Since that time, all kerbside collection customers in the shire have been supplied with a 140 litre glass-only bin (purple lid).
Mayor, Cr Janet Pearce thanked residents and businesses for their tremendous assistance in removing glass from the recycling stream through use of the public place bins.
“The community response has been just outstanding, and we have diverted 74 tonnes of glass from landfill in just a short time through use of these public place bins,” Cr Pearce said.
“It’s been a tremendous effort and we appreciate everyone who supported and got behind this initiative and did their bit by taking glass to either the public place bins or to our transfer stations for recycling.
“Thank you to everyone, and please keep up the good work by placing glass in your new glass-only household bin.”
All glass collected in public place bins, glass-only kerbside bins and at transfer stations will be recycled and reused in road construction materials and a range of other applications. Skip bins will remain in place at Council’s transfer stations in Kyneton, Woodend and Romsey.
The new glass-only household bins will be collected every four weeks.
